Annual campaign – April 2023

Because where there is cancer… there is also life!

Cancer is not a rare disease. Every 9 minutes, a Quebecer is diagnosed with cancer.  The disease upends so many lives, striking people with no regard for gender, financial status, or age…

As experience taught me, it is not among the category of diseases that only strike “other people”.

On November 15, 2021, I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, an infiltrating duct carcinoma that needed to be treated as quickly as possible. This would entail undergoing chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy. Needless to say, my past life as an active 36-year-old woman with no medical issues was totally upended.

Yes, my life was topsy-turvy, but it did not come to a screeching halt. And this is what we need to remember: in spite of the shock, the treatments, the side effects and the sometimes staggering astonishment, life goes on!

This is why, in recognition of Cancer Awareness Month, I am asking you to support people with cancer and their loved ones, for their lives continue. Not only do they continue to have daily tasks and responsibilities, but they are also still able to dream and feel joy, spend time with loved ones, and dare to see far into the future.

A few minutes after receiving the devastating news, I was given a medical note authorizing a medical leave of absence for an undetermined period. In the days that followed (a whirlwind, really), I met my dedicated nurse, who gave me a folder with information on the treatments I would be undergoing as well as several resources. This is how I discovered the Foundation and its many services, one of which, art therapy, immediately grabbed my attention.

These workshops, possible thanks to your donations, had countless positive effects. Commiserating with other women in my age group who were also facing cancer made me feel less alone and I also made new friends. I was able to give free rein to my emotions through art – my favorite means of expression – and bonded anew with my own creative nature despite the ordeal I was facing! It literally allowed me to transform a negative experience into something positive.

Today, my spouse Jonathan and I want to support the Foundation that was there for us. This is why we are asking you to please donate, during Cancer Awareness Month, to help people facing this devastating disease continue to live a full and worthy life throughout their ordeal.

I recently learned that the participation rate for the various complementary therapies offered by the Foundation – such as the art-therapy workshops I so enjoyed – has grown by 40%.

This equates to 14,000 participations in one or another of these therapies in 2022 alone!

There is obviously a demand for such activities: please join me in supporting people who need them. For your donation during Cancer Awareness Month, I want to extend my most sincere thanks.
