Annual campaign – October 2024

Help them take back control of their lives

At a certain point, I felt a desire to work with people who, having heard warning bells, needed of help and support. I have been a kinesiologist for 40 years now, the last 12 of them at the Quebec Cancer Foundation’s Montreal Regional Center and Lodge.

I have the possibility of changing people’s lives by helping them to the best of my ability and allowing them to reap the benefits and joy of physical activity. As an expert in the science of human movement, I apply my knowledge from a perspective of prevention and treatment, offering tailored programs and exercises suitable for people affected by cancer.

Everyone is aware that physical activity has countless health benefits, but what most people don’t know is that even exercising lightly can be extremely positive for people with cancer, and this from the moment they are diagnosed.

While the effects of kinesiology are acknowledged throughout the world, the Foundation was the first Quebec organization to develop and offer, in 2011, kinesiology treatments for people impacted by cancer.

Your support and donations are what enable the Foundation to offer a constantly growing number of complementary therapies that supplement traditional medical treatments. These services have literally changed the lives of people who found themselves overwhelmed by the wide-ranging impact of a cancer diagnosis.

The benefits of physical exercise are both concrete and numerous: decrease in the side effects of treatment; easier management of fatigue, stress, and anxiety; heightened energy level; easing of muscular tension; greater respiratory control (in conjunction with radiation therapy); and, improved joint mobility following surgery. Kinesiology sessions can effectively help people get back into shape, adopt healthier lifestyle habits, and prepare themselves to return to work.

Helping someone accurately identify their needs is greatly facilitated by carefully observing a person’s preoccupations and how they are coping with the ordeal. This calls for a helpful ear and empathy. Cancer not only wreaks havoc on the human body, but it also upends one’s daily life. A key aspect of regaining control over one’s life is to quickly introduce a simple and healthy daily routine. This routine often begins with breathing exercises and exercises to improve one’s posture.

The point is obviously not to ask someone with lung cancer to do push-ups, especially when they may be finding it difficult to simply get up from a sitting position. Once we understand what people with cancer must contend with, we can begin to adapt the type, frequency, and intensity of various physical activities to even the most precarious health condition.

I recently met with someone who seemed truly depressed, to the point where venturing outside was a challenge. Once I learned that he was passionate about photography, I asked him to go outdoors every day and take one single photograph on a specific theme; this also had the added benefit of inciting him to walk about. At the opposite end of the spectrum, another woman undergoing breast cancer treatments in the spring had set the goal of running a half-marathon in the fall. Thanks to the Foundation’s kinesiology program, she achieved her objective… the following year.

These are concrete examples of how kindness and empathy can bring people to take back control of their lives, which is exactly what the Foundation does every day, thanks to your support. Please donate to help people with cancer once again enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle. Together, we can face cancer.

The impact of the postal strike is being felt on the funds raised.

However, strike or no strike, cancer doesn’t take a break.
