Colorectal cancer

The recommended test for colorectal cancer screening is the immunoassay fecal occult blood test (iFOBT), also called the FIT (fecal immunochemical test).

For any questions:

This test is performed to detect the presence of blood, invisible to the naked eye, in the stool. This can be a sign of colorectal cancer, more commonly referred to as colon cancer.

The iFOBT is easy to perform and can be done at home. You simply need to collect a small sample of your stool,  which will then be analyzed at the laboratory.

If you are between 50 and 74 years old, it is recommended that you undergo this screening test once every 2 years.

If you display symptoms or have risk factors associated with colorectal cancer, speak with a healthcare professional to explore which exam would be most suitable for your specific situation.

The detection of blood in your stool does not automatically mean that you have cancer. A colonoscopy (examination via camera of the large intestine) will be suggested as a means of identifying the source of the bleeding.

To obtain a sample collection kit:

  • If you have a family doctor, you can ask for a prescription; it will indicate where you can obtain the necessary supplies.
  • If you do not have a family doctor:

At the time of your appointment, the healthcare professional will determine whether you are eligible for a screening test and if so, will provide you with the sample collection kit.

Check the Government of Quebec Website for further information on colorectal cancer screening.
